Many of you have been wondering where RuneWeb is going to go for the future. Well, a handful of work has been done behind the scenes for quite some time now, and we now feel that it's safe to reveal to you, the community, what we're planning on doing.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you RuneWeb 2. No release date has yet been decided, since we have a lot of work to do.
RuneWeb v.2
Of course, work is being done on it, in gradual but measured baby steps. That's where you come in. What new and exciting features do you want RuneWeb 2 to have?
This thread has been created for feedback and requests to be made. Of course, some requests will be taken in based on a feasibility schema (can we do it and will it have a profound effect on the site). I'll start the ball rolling with some features that are definitely going to happen.
List of Suggestions that Will Happen:- Skin Selector (including themes from Lleyta, TzHaar, the Wilderness, Desert). More can be added if need be.
- AJAX Technology, to improve speed and performance of the site
- Quest Sorter and Relational Table, a small feature that will be written by Makoto to sort quests based on name, difficulty, requirements; relational table will draw out a hierarchy of all quests and draw relations to one another
- Interactive Coordinate Map
- Interactive and Comprehensive POH Designer
- RuneWeb Toolkit
List of Items that might happen (those that will not will be crossed out):- Bestiary, contributed by the community
- Misc. Guides / Website Link
- Shop Database
Market Price Check Guide -- Scrapped due to infeasibility- Toolkit-Related:
- Combat Experience Calculator
- # of resources to level-up
- Option to add your RuneScape Name underneath your Member Number on the forums
- Weekly polls on the front page
- Repair/readjust and tweak the Item Search
- Report button on every guide page to report errors/incorrect info
- Exp table
- More stuff in the "downloads" section
- A few important links up there instead of all of them on the left side
List of Suggestions that Will NEVER Happen:- Worldswitcher / toolkit behaving as a browser to play RuneScape from
- Adult content
How you can help!
Some of these features will require innovation, some will require talents in coding with possible examples, and many of these (including the skin selector) will require pictures. You can contribute one of three ways:
- Reply with an innovative suggestion not on this list, or expand on a suggestion that may seem a bit abstract. - Take a snapshot of an in-game feature that you think RuneWeb can use - Talk about it in IRC

Hmm, I think one of those item/monster/people databases would be helpful, also, a teamspeak server for RuneWeb.
Another thing I have spoken to you about is a Misc. Guide link.

The V.2 looks awesome, I really like it. Also a shop database, where that shop is, what items that shop sells and how much the items cost roughly.
Maybe a Market Price Guide, lots of work and updated heaps, maybe a little to much work....
Hope that helps.

Replying to a few suggestions:
Miscellaneous Guides: I don't see a problem with that coming out at all, but that's pretty much up to Data (controls content related to the game). I'll ask him if he has any issues with it.
Monster/Item/People DB: We have an item search, we just don't have a Beastiary. One issue with that is we would need several people to go after 12,000+ NPCs and tell us what they drop, etc, etc. This would take several months to accomplish. I believe it can be done though, just requires a lot of community participation.
Shop DB: It's possible, but I don't think it'd help all that much. A shop database would simply tell you what items are in what store, and while that's helpful in itself, it could be integrated into the item search.
Market Guide: Infeasible at this moment. It's not something that can be automated, and we do not have enough people to begin the work of maintaining such a massive database. It's definitely something we'd like to do, but we need more people for it (hence RW2).
Banner/Forums: Thanks, Spikey. I'd like to change that banner, though; something a bit more serene such as an actual shot of the waterfall itself instead of three dudes on top of it. Even someplace where lots of people fish would be ideal; perhaps Catherby or the Fishing Guild. As far as forums, I can't say that I would want to re-skin several hundred files of IPB, so I don't know if we'll be receiving a forum update in the near future.
RuneWeb Toolkit: At this time, since it's a broken [closed] beta, I can only confirm that IRC and stat comparison features will be available in the toolkit. If anyone else has any suggestions to it, post here.

Makoto: for future reference, I would be more than happy to help with a guide or something else. I had in mind the bestiary. Somewhere on my home network (I'm at school now) I have a 'bestiary' of the monsters I have trained on. I would be willing to submit this, and also try out some other monsters too. Just trying to help!

Makoto, maybe in the RW Toolkit you could put a combat XP Calulator, as in how much experience you could get off killing one type of monster in a certain amount of time?

On the calculators, instead to read the hiscore every time for calculate something, to read it once then operate it using dynamic html (html.inner atribute) and maybe some cookies if needed.
Its possible to update the page without reload it or wait to load the new content of a page, making the server to do less operations and making better the user experience. They are named dynamic html, w3d controls or something (long ago I used them a lot) It means all exist on the first page, but depends of the user to show the content they want to see. Its like the tip of the day for windows, but applied to a site (maybe secret rewards?)
About goal signatures, as original improvement, it can show how many resources we could need for our goal level (instead how many xp) Show how many yew logs for firemaking level or how many iron ore till level up could be awesome. Like when we pick a skill for make a goal signature we could pick a item and a skill and it sets automaticaly how many items till the goal level at the skill (all non important items could be not listed, but it depends of the info we have about the item)

Just to let everyone know, Catatifish is the one writing the toolkit. He'll be the one that gives the final say on certain things, but I at least influence him slightly.

Might be worth a shot; we'll need the information from the Beastiary if/when it's available. Can't say if it'll ever be ready before the toolkit is released.

1. I think that the calculator backend needs to be rewritten anyway, but I doubt that we'd be caching user stats and data locally for any extended period of time (even in a cookie). The reason is that this data can change.
2. It's called AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML). This will at the very least reduce the amount of data transmitted on the server; i.e. instead of loading 900KB into a browser each refresh, we'd only be loading the mandatory data (content), which is easily 40-120KB.
3. The signatures might not be so complex (and it's not a bad idea, actually), but I was thinking that would be more suited towards the toolkit instead of a goal signature. Data like that is very hard to cram on 325 x 50 pixels of room, when 85% of it is occupied by the goal throbber.

1.- It can be like 24 hours to expire, and on that time (if the user desires) could reload hiscores as his will.
2.- If it gets in any form implement, skip the static images. They needs be cacheable and always present. Maybe a frame could help. The dynamic content should get in some form updated (maybe using a php alternate code - see above)
3.- It can be managed by colors, or the background showing the item (gold bar by example). Runeweb have a nice design of signatures and i dont doubt this can be applied on the future.
Look at this part of the code I made when jagex updated hiscores page and it blocked external parsers (On offtopic forum i can post the full code if you need)
CODE $Player = "cafebcs"; $host = "hiscore.runescape.com"; $page = "/hiscorepersonal.ws?user1=".$Player; $port = "80"; $fp = fsockopen( "$host", 80, &$errno, &$errdesc); if ( ! $fp ) die ( "Couldn't connect to $host:\nError: $errno\nDesc: $errdesc\n" ); $request = "GET $page HTTP/1.0\r\n"; $request .= "Host: $host\r\n"; $request .= "Referer: $host:$port$page\r\n"; $request .= "User-Agent: PHP test client\r\n\r\n"; $Cadena = ""; fputs ( $fp, $request ); while ( ! feof( $fp ) ) $Cadena = $Cadena.fgets( $fp, 2048 ); fclose( $fp );
The code means that you are reading a external page without leave the main page, making the external page an slave of the main page (you can apply this to any info you want to read. This kind of code is used by youtube and maybe by google on the future.
